And when music is not just your passion but also your profession, you need the very best headphones you can lay your hands on! Thankfully, there are some professional headphones that offer exactly what you need, especially if you are a DJ. Read on to know more about one such product, the Sony MDR V500DJ headphone, and find out whether you should invest in a pair of these!

Any product, carrying the Sony brand name, raises expectations by quite a few notches and usually these don’t disappoint either. Can the same be said of the Sony MDR V500DJ headphones? Let’s find out.

First Impressions

The Sony MDR V500DJ headphones are professional looking and appear true to their name. These headphones are a part of Sony’s Studio Monitor line of products, which are made from high-end materials and incorporate advanced sound engineering in their build and design.

These are supra-aural headphones with a closed-back and this is what makes them fit for pro use. As a DJ, you need to monitor sounds in a noisy environment such as disc or a gig. These headphones allow only a small amount of ambient noise to enter your ears and so provide you a certain level of acoustic isolation. However, don’t be too expectant about this feature, because the isolation you get is mostly on the midrange and treble. Therefore, certain sounds, similar in frequency to the noise of trains or subways can still interrupt what you are hearing via the headphones.

The headphones are foldable and don’t look too bulky either, so you may find it easy to carry them with you to and from work. The swivel ear-cups allow you to easily listen with one ear while you are remixing. They are quite robust too, which is an important feature because in your hectic schedule, headphones may be subjected to really rough use.

Quick Specs

Here are the tech and dimensional specs of the Sony MDR V500DJ professional headphones:

  • Frequency response: 10 Hz-25 kHz
  • Cable length: 3m or 9.8 feet.
  • Weight: 225 g or 7.94 oz
  • Efficiency: 97 dB/V
  • Sound Check

  • This headphone can reproduce bass and midrange with fine linearity.
  • The PET diaphragm works well, to give you minimal distortion even at high volumes.
  • When a sound-check was done, the response curve was well balanced, but a little limited at both ends of the audio spectrum, which indicates a slightly less than ideal overall bandwidth for the product.
  • These headphones can be quite a bargain considering they sell for just around $50 at online retailers such as Amazon. Although the performance is not quite what you would expect from a professional headphone, you cannot hope to get better at this price! So, if you have always been looking for a pro headphone for less than $100, you need not look further than the Sony MDR V500DJ.

It’s hard to rate these headphones down because they’re not too bad for the price, but don’t buy them expecting anything spectacular. The build quality is ok, they’re comfortable enough but they’re really let down most of all by the sound quality. Good for amateurs, I’d say, if you’re just starting out and are on a budget – but you’ll want to upgrade pretty soon.
